Huh... growing up is so serious, mundane, and daunting too - but I was thinking about it all wrong.
It has become apparent to me that I'm growing up and doing more adult things as the days go by. And believe it or not, the thought of that has made me uncomfortable. While some see the freedom that comes with being a grown-up, I could only see the increase in responsibilities and multi-tasking. Someone should have told me that being an adult is a full-time job haha. I'm at the toddler stage of adulthood... and I've got a whole lot of it ahead of me too.
Tips on how to embrace adulthood:
1.Don't resent change.
Life is full of constant changes which we have no control of at times. Becoming an adult means we make our own choices but don't forget that the outcome may look different to what we expect/anticipate. My respect for adult figures in my life has grown a lot in the short time that I've been considered an 'adult'. In my mother's words "Stop seeing adulthood as a burden". I'm reminded that change isn't all bad, in fact, it is a key part of growth.
2.Take opportunities to learn.
Let's use the analogy of a bird leaving the nest. Adulting is similar... it is about independence. Giving things a try on your own is scary at first, no doubt, but the beautify of it is the many chances to learn along the way. When the opportunities come for you, don't shy away from them, less they pass you by and you remain in the nest. Embrace mistakes but long to master the basics of adulthood. Remember that you can ask for help when you're unsure and need some guidance. There is no rulebook or A to Z to adulting- though sometimes I wish there was one.
3.Gain experience through practice.
Live life to the fullest. Become an adult by experiencing all that life has to offer. The challenges, the memories that will be made and the journey that you will take are unclear however consider that each of them is a form of good practice to becoming your best self.
4.Find a balance.
We don't have to say goodbye to our youth. I thought I had to let go completely of being a child but really I don't. Being an adult means continuing to do things that make us feel as excitable, happy and energetic as a child might feel. You need a balance of taking responsibility and being 'serious' alongside enjoying the little stress-free activities. Make time for yourself and for others by reflecting on what your priorities are. Find what works for you so that you can embrace adulthood as you should.
