'If it doesn't challenge you it doesn't change you' (one of my favourite sayings)- In today's post, I write about what it means to take risks for better rewards.
Way before lockdown, I was surprised to identify things that I was afraid of, anxious about and in denial of. As I reflected, it dawned on me that I was able to overcome challenges by stepping out of my comfort zone. Believe me, it wasn't and isn't always easy but it is possible.
Sometimes dwelling in your safe place -which is different for everybody- can inhibit your growth and development. For example, I was surrounded by all my friends(school) and everything was familiar but had I stayed there I wouldn't have been as happy. I needed change to experience the new. Ask yourself ' Do I need to change anything for my growth and progress? If the answers 'No' then it may be possible that you have outgrown your current comfort zone.
When things get tough it's natural to want to avoid it -but the truth is it's worth trying than assuming it won't get easier or can't be done. I challenge you to start what you've been putting off and I want you to be reminded that you can do whatever you set your mind to do.
The lessons I've learnt about getting out of a comfort zone:
1. Comfort zones are personal.
What we need to overcome and how much time we need to overcome it will differ for everyone. Don't compare what you are doing to anyone- Run your own race. Remember to take baby steps out of your comfort zone for yourself and when you're ready, I've learnt that from experience.
2. It helps your growth.
Taking chances - what I wouldn't normally do boosted my self-esteem and confidence. As a perfectionist - I kept doubting myself which meant I remained unchallenged and unchanged. Each time I push myself, the experience teaches a valuable lesson.
3. Be Prepared-It will be difficult.
Comfort zones require change hence it may feel tough (emotionally and mentally). My advice is that you continue to persevere /don't give up on yourself. It will surprise you how capable you are when you just keep going. Don't forget that you can ask for help and get support from people when you are giving these new ventures a go.
Get out of your comfort zone without a doubt, is a process, a valuable process, that should ultimately make you a better, stronger and happier version of yourself.
Thank you for reading this week's blog post- something still out of my depths. Comment below a time you came out of your comfort zone and how it felt.
